Crest seeks volunteers for Beach Sweep/Earth Day event April 22

The Borough of Wildwood Crest is seeking volunteers to help keep the community’s beaches clean, safe and among the best in the state.

The borough’s Department of Public Works, in conjunction with Clean Ocean Action, will host this year’s first Beach Sweep on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Volunteers should gather at Centennial Park, located at Fern Road and Ocean Avenue. Volunteers should wear weather-appropriate clothing. The event will be held rain or shine. Equipment will be provided by the Wildwood Crest Department of Public Works.

Volunteers of all ages are needed for the event. Participants collect, remove and record valuable data about debris, which is presented in annual reports and used to advance federal, state and local programs for litter abatement on New Jersey’s beaches and in its waterways.

This Beach Sweep will be extremely helpful to the borough’s already intensive efforts to keep its vast expanse of beaches clean.

According to the Clean Ocean Action website, more than 105,500 volunteers have participated and removed over 5.4 million pieces of debris from New Jersey’s beaches and waterways since the program began in 1985. They join as groups (community, school, business, and organization), families, or individuals. Beach Sweeps is one of the longest-running programs of its kind in the world.  Clean Ocean Action is a leading national and regional voice working to protect waterways along the New Jersey and New York coastlines using science, law, research, education and citizen action.

Volunteers can register by contacting Kay Sagal at the Department of Public Works by phone at (609) 522-7446 or by email at ksagal@wildwoodcrest.org. Participants may also register on the day of the event beginning at 9 a.m. at Centennial Park, located on Fern Road and Ocean Avenue.  Residents are also encouraged to inquire about the Crest’s successful Adopt-A-Beach program.
